Ion-specific thermodynamical properties of aqueous proteins Anais da ABC (AABC)
Lima,Eduardo R.A.; Biscaia Jr.,Evaristo C.; Boström,Mathias; Tavares,Frederico W..
Ion-specific interactions between two colloidal particles are calculated using a modified Poisson-Boltzmann (PB)equationandMonteCarlo(MC)simulations. PBequationspresentgoodresultsofionicconcentration profiles around a macroion, especially for salt solutions containing monovalent ions. These equations include not only electrostatic interactions, but also dispersion potentials originated from polarizabilities of ions and proteins. This enables us to predict ion-specific properties of colloidal systems. We compared results obtained from the modified PB equation with those from MC simulations and integral equations. Phase diagrams and osmotic second virial coefficients are also presented for different salt solutions at different pH and ionic strengths, in...

Latex is an endogenous milky fluid synthesized and accumulated under pressure in a network of laticifer cells. In this study, latices from five plant species were examined for deterrent effect on oviposition of two Coleoptera (Bruchidae) pests. The latex from Euphorbia tirucalli, Calotropis procera and Plumeria rubrae exhibited deterrent activity on oviposition of both Callosobruchus maculatusand Zabrotis subfasciatus beetles. The latex from Cryptostegia grandiflora and Himathantus drasticus were less effective to C. maculatus and Z. subfasciatus oviposition, respectively. Eggs laid on latex-treated seeds were not affected. The emergence and the mean time of development and weight of larvae grown in treated seeds were similar to the controls. The deterrent...

Leaf seasonal accumulation of a 47-kDa dehydrin and changes in its cryoprotective activity in Nothofagus dombeyi (Mirb.) Blume Gayana Botánica
Gallardo-Cerda,Jorge; Bravo,León A; Corcuera,Luis J.
Nothofagus dombeyi (Mirb.) Blume is an evergreen tree, pioneer in habitats subject to unfavorable environmental conditions as nighttime freezing temperatures and low water content. It inhabits zones characterized by cold Winter with freezing temperature and Spring frosts reaching to -5°C. Furthermore, it has the capacity to maintain a functional photosynthetic apparatus at low temperatures. We postulated that N. dombeyi is capable to accumulate dehydrins in leaves in response to cold. Seasonal variation in dehydrins, soluble total proteins, and cryoprotective activity in vitro of protein extracts of N. dombeyi leaves were analyzed during the years 2004 and 2005. A dehydrin-like protein of 47-kDa was immunologically identified; this protein was present only...

Liaison de l'oestradiol 17 beta dans les hepatocytes de truite Arc-en-ciel et induction de la vitellogenine et de son ARNm specifique ArchiMer
Maitre, J; Mercier, L; Dolo, L; Valotaire, Y.
In the liver of rainbow trout (Salmo gairdnerii ), vitellogenin (Vg) synthesis is influenced by oestradiol (E sub(2)) which is believed to act through the classical mechanism of steroid hormone action. After binding of the hormone to a soluble specific receptor protein, the oestradiol-receptor complex is translocated to the nucleus, where it interacts with DNA and modulates expression of Vg genes, leading to increased synthesis of specific mRNA and Vg. The authors show here: (i) the presence of specific oestrogen receptors in the cytosol of the male trout liver. (ii) The male liver, offering, an ideal experimental control of "zero" background, the authors followed - in the liver of male trouts - the kinetics of induction of Vg mRNA by hybridization with Vg...

Microparticulate feeds for Penaeid larvae ArchiMer
Kanazawa, A.
The mass production of penaeid larvae still depends on live foods such as diatoms, Chlorella and Artemia . However, it requires much facilities, maintenance expenses, and labor to produce a desired amount of life foods safely and constantly. Also, the nutritive value of planktonic organisms is occasionally variable and this makes the use of live food for mass culture restrictive. Therefore, it is necessary to develop microparticulate diets as a substitute for live foods to further increase the productivity of seed for shrimp culture.

Nova Estratégia Metodológica para Análise Eletroforética (Tricina-SDS-PAGE), visando à Identificação Peptídeo-proteica em Soja. Infoteca-e

Nutritional quality of the protein of Vigna unguiculata L. Walp and its protein isolate Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Frota,Karoline de Macêdo Gonçalves; Lopes,Lays Arnaud Rosal; Silva,Izabel Cristina Veras; Arêas,José Alfredo Gomes.
ABSTRACT A protein's true digestibility and amino acid composition are important characteristics for its nutritional characterisation. This study determined the true digestibility of the protein from cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp.) and of its protein isolate, and their nutritional values were estimated after correcting for the amino acid score. The protein was isolated from the defatted whole bean by its alkaline solubilisation and isoelectric precipitation. The amino acid composition of the protein from the whole bean and from the isolate was determined by ion-exchange chromatography. Protein digestibility was assessed by the nitrogen balance method. The amino acid score is the lowest value obtained from the ratio between the individual amount of each...

Ontogeny of the gastrointestinal tract of marine fish larvae ArchiMer
Zambonino, Jose-luis; Cahu, Chantal.
Marine fish larvae undergo major morphological and cellular changes during the first month of life. The ontogeny of the gastrointestinal tract combines these two aspects of the larval development and is very interesting in that the timing of functional changes appears genetically hard-wired. The goal of this paper is to give an overview of the gastrointestinal development process in marine fish larvae, with particular attention to three species: sea bass; red drum; and sole, since the description of gut maturation in fish larvae was initiated during the last decade with these species. During the early stages, marine fish larvae exhibit particular digestive features. Concerning the exocrine pancreas, amylase expression decreases with age from the third week...

Pentoses Used in Cultures of Synechococcus nidulans and Spirulina paracas: Evaluation of Effects in Growth and in Content of Proteins and Carbohydrates BABT
Freitas,Bárbara Catarina Bastos de; Cassuriaga,Ana Paula Aguiar; Morais,Michele Greque de; Atala,Daniel Ibraim Pires; Costa,Jorge Alberto Vieira.
Abstract The biological assimilation of the sugars present in lignocellulosic residues has gained prominence since these residues are the most abundant and economic residues in nature. Thus, the objective of this work was to determine whether the use of D-xylose and L-arabinose as sources of carbon in Synechococcus nidulans and Spirulina paracas cultures affects the growth and production of proteins and carbohydrates. Kinetic growth parameters, pentose consumption, protein content and carbohydrates were evaluated. Synechococcus nidulans and Spirulina paracas consumed all concentrations of pentose used. The highest cellular concentration (1.37 g.L-1) and the highest protein productivity (54 mg.L-1.d-1) were obtained for Spirulina paracas, which was...

Photo-oxidative stress in coconut seedlings: early events to leaf scorching and seedling death Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Naresh,Kumar S.; Kasturi Bai,K.V..
Experiments were conducted on coconut seedlings to delineate events of photo-oxidative stress damage. Studies on chlorophyll fluorescence indicated a clear case of excess light energy under high light conditions causing stress to coconut seedlings raised under coconut palms. Quantum yield of photo-chemistry of leaflets exposed to high light was significantly less than those under shade. Seedlings exposed to high light and then shifted to shade have shown significant improvement in quantum yield. Excess light energy harvested by chlorophyll antenna caused high non-photochemical quenching resulting in production of biologically toxic super oxide, hydrogen peroxide and hydroxyl radicals. It is apparent that photoinhibition of photosynthesis takes place due to...
